About Babcock & Wilcox and its asbestos trust
Babcock & Wilcox filed for Chapter 11 in February 2000, and its asbestos trust was established in 2006 with roughly $1.85 billion in initial funding.
Babcock & Wilcox asbestos products
The Babcock & Wilcox Asbestos Trust covers exposure to products such as:
- marine and industrial boilers
- boiler refractory
- high-pressure steam piping
- boiler casings
Most of these products contained asbestos during the period early 1900s-1978.
Who may qualify
Exposure to Babcock & Wilcox products was most common among Navy (highest), Coast Guard, Marines aboard Navy ships, and Army at depots and industrial sites. The roles most often associated with this exposure include boiler technicians, machinist’s mates, hull maintenance technicians, and enginemen. Babcock & Wilcox was the dominant supplier of Navy boilers for decades, so boiler-room and engine-room sailors frequently qualify.
Scheduled values and payments
The Babcock & Wilcox Asbestos Trust publishes scheduled values for different diseases. For mesothelioma, the historical scheduled value has been in the range of $175,000. The trust’s June 2026 notice sets the payment percentage at 4.3 percent.
Figures on this page are reference values from published trust documents and are not a promise of payment. See the full disclaimer.
