About Johns-Manville and its asbestos trust
Johns-Manville filed the first major asbestos bankruptcy in August 1982. The Manville Trust was established in 1988 and was the first and one of the largest asbestos trusts, with about $2.5 billion in initial funding.
Johns-Manville asbestos products
The Manville Personal Injury Settlement Trust covers exposure to products such as:
- Asbestocel corrugated air-cell pipe insulation
- Marinite asbestos-cement wallboard
- Transite asbestos-cement panels and pipe
- Cafco and JM-86 sprayed fireproofing
- Thermo-12 pipe insulation
Most of these products contained asbestos during the period 1929-1980s (varies by product line).
Who may qualify
Exposure to Johns-Manville products was most common among Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. The roles most often associated with this exposure include engineering-rate sailors, shipyard workers, and personnel who lived or worked in barracks and base buildings. Manville products appeared across all branches: Asbestocel in Navy engine rooms, and Transite, Marinite, and Cafco spray in Army barracks and Air Force base buildings.
Scheduled values and payments
The Manville Personal Injury Settlement Trust publishes scheduled values for different diseases. For mesothelioma, the historical scheduled value has been in the range of $350,000, and the trust currently pays 5.1 percent of that value (per the trust’s pro-rata notice in effect since February 2021).
Figures on this page are reference values from published trust documents and are not a promise of payment. See the full disclaimer.
