Mesothelioma
Funds Administration

Lisa Hyde Barrett, RN, BSN is a nurse leader with many years of dedicated bedside experience and a strong clinical focus on mesothelioma. She serves as a Clinical Content Reviewer for Mesothelioma Funds Administration, contributing to the accuracy of clinical-medical content across our resources for veterans and families.

Background

Lisa has supported many patients facing complex and life-altering diagnoses, with a particular focus on mesothelioma. Her bedside experience spans surgical, oncologic, and transitional care — the spaces where mesothelioma patients and their families face the most demanding day-to-day clinical decisions.

Sugarbaker and the International Mesothelioma Program

Lisa played a key role in developing one of the first transitional mesothelioma programs in Boston, designed to bridge the gap between acute hospital care and recovery at home. She worked in collaboration with the late David Sugarbaker, MD — founder of the International Mesothelioma Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and one of the most influential figures in modern mesothelioma surgical care — to advance a model of care focused on continuity and whole-person support.

Dr. Sugarbaker’s program established the multidisciplinary approach that is now standard at major mesothelioma centers across the country. Lisa’s transitional-care work was one of the bridges from his hospital-based surgical model to the post-discharge reality that mesothelioma families actually live with.

Nursing Liaisons

Lisa is part of Nursing Liaisons, alongside co-founder Eleanor Ericson, RN, BSN. The practice supports mesothelioma patients and families through transitional care navigation — making the move from acute hospital care to home recovery as smooth as possible during a critical window for the patient and the family.

What “Clinical Content Reviewer” means

Clinical content reviewers help us make sure the medical information on this site is accurate and reflects current standards of care. The reviewers do not author every page; they review the clinical-medical sections and flag content that needs correction. The legal, VA-procedural, and trust-fund-mechanics sections are handled separately.

Senior medical review is provided by Dr. Marcelo C. DaSilva, MD, FACS, FICS. Lisa’s clinical-content review complements Dr. DaSilva’s medical review — particularly on transitional care, caregiver support, and the practical day-to-day clinical decisions that follow a mesothelioma diagnosis.

Areas of focus

  • Transitional care from hospital to home for mesothelioma patients
  • Post-surgical recovery navigation
  • Multidisciplinary care coordination (surgery, medical oncology, palliative care)
  • Family caregiver education
  • End-of-life and hospice transitions
